About the Process:

In Northern India, the garment industry is a major contributor of jobs and economic growth. Discarded fabric remnants are collected from factories and sent to artisans who repurpose the fabric into practical pieces. Men typically do most of the machine-based sewing, while women finish the stitching and delicate embroidery by hand. "Kantha" style fabric, featuring long straight rows of colorful stitches, originated in this region and is popularly used in quilts, pillows, and home decor. Buying Fair Trade means providing workers with a steady income and adequate working conditions, which enable them to send their children to school, rather than being forced to depend on them for labor.
