About the Process:

"Basha" is derived from the Bangali words for "house" and "hope", which is exactly what they provide the artisans they employ. In Bangladesh, many women are subjected to abuse in their home and work environments, where they often remain out of fear of not being able to provide for their children. Each year, more and more young girls and women are sold or forced into prostitution and slavery. In addition to rehabilitative services, Basha provides these women with practical skills, creative freedom, and perhaps most importantly, community, giving them the opportunity to gain financial independence, and access to health care and educations for their children.

More than just a blanket, each Basha quilt is made of layers of repurposed cotton saris symbolizing a new life for both the fabric and the women who once wore it. Rows of colorful stitches that stretch across the material serve as a reminder of the hands that delicately crafted every piece and the wholeness that each quilt represents. No two quilts are a like, but they all share a universal message of strength, hope, and dignity while bringing a touch of beauty to the spaces they live. Which Basha quilt will you invite into your home?
