About the Process:

In India, the caste system has determined the occupations and socioeconomic status of artisans for generations, and entire cities are divided into communities based on their trade. While this has helped to preserve beautiful and rich traditions such as embroidery and textile design, it has also made it difficult for artisans to earn a fair wage and have access to education, health care, and more. In India, embroidery is traditionally a male-dominated trade and requires long hours spent sitting on the floor or at weaving looms, and an incredible amount of attention to detail.

From the Persian word for "needle", embroidered suzanis are large tapestries traditionally given as part of a bride's dowry on her wedding day, and often feature symbols of life and fertility such as vines, leaves, fruit, and animals, along with geometric patterns and shapes. In recent years, as suzani fabric and embroidery has grown in popularity around the world, it has been adapted to a variety of styles and home decor for export.  By working with artisans in India to create beautiful, modern designs, we can help to preserve this valuable art form and support the talented artisans and cultures it reflects.
